What is
Acupuncture?

There are many styles of acupuncture. Some styles are aimed to directly target and release knots, adhesions, and tight muscles. While other styles aim to effect the more complex energies, systems, and functions of the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the classical viewpoint of acupuncture theory, which is supported by thousands of years of empirical evidence, identified channels, also called Meridians or pathways, that run throughout the body. These channels connect internal organs together with different tissue layers and regions of the body.  This connection allows the body to communicate information, provide necessary nourishment, and send vital energy throughout. This energy is called Qi.

Acupuncture helps the body to move and unblock the flow of the Qi in the channels.

So what does that mean?

The energy throughout our body runs along a system of channels.  One way of understanding these channels is to think of it as a system of waterways, streams, creeks, and rivers. If a waterway is blocked, then many difficulties occur in and around the area of blockage. A blocked channel in the body causes not only pain and dysfunction in the local area, but it also effects the channels downstream. This can cause referral pain as well as pain and dysfunction in other areas of the body. If there is a free flow within these channels, then there is no pain. If pain is present, then it is a significant sign that the channel is blocked, and free flow is being obstructed.

A slightly more current perspective demonstrates that acupuncture can help to increase circulation, reduce inflammation, reduce muscle tightness, help calm spasms, and stimulate the release of endorphins which can result in pain relief.  This process can also aid the body in reducing and calming the “flight or fight” process in the body also known as a sympathetic nervous system response.

When there is balance in our bodies, our environment, and in our emotions, a vital energy flows and self-regulates within us. This vital energy is everywhere and all around us. Our bodies strive to maintain a smooth flow of energy. There are a million different reasons we can get out of balance.  This is where the magic of acupuncture comes in.

Whether you're stressed, have digestive issues, can't sleep, in pain, suffering from a chronic condition, or there is an internal dysfunction, I would welcome the opportunity to partner with you to help your body restore its balance and wellbeing.

Although a chronic condition may take more treatments to help, many people experience remarkable changes early on. Throughout my practice, I’ve grown to experience nothing but respect and awe for the body’s extraordinary healing capacity. Our bodies are truly designed to self-heal, and that rebalancing starts within.
